Niha fort located at 60 km from Beirut. It is carved inside a rock cavity overlooking wadi Besri . It is cited in some texts as “ chkif tayroun grotto” as mentioned in the writings of crusades since the 12th century A.D
This fort became known in Lebanon’s modern history as “Fakherddin’s Fort” when the Maani emir Fakherddine the second took refuge there in 1633 A.D along with his family and some relatives in consequence of his defeat in the battle against the Ottoman army during the era of the Ottoman Ahmad Bacha Kojok.
After a prolonged siege of the fort and the prince continuous resistance, Ahmad Bacha polluted the running water toward the fort with blood and animal manure; this happened following the discovery of underground channels in nearby “Ain Halkum” spring. The Emir escaped and managed to hide in the neighboring Jezzine Grotto where he was arrested later on before being departed to Istanbul where he was executed in 1635 A.D
At the outset, it is mentioned in one of the popular legends during those events that the daughter of emir committed suicide along with her horse after blindfolding him and jumping from the top of the fort.
